Progress is coming along. I was picking up 351-C stroker (396ci) for a buddies mustang that I'm building and I took a few photos.
These are the finished spray weld on the heads. They did have to put new guides in the heads after the excess heat from the welding process caused distortion. The big end of the rods are currently being matched for proper side to side clearances and then it will be balanced.

bump!
The peanut gallery is a patiently waiting for updates... Wink
I'm really looking forward to hearing about cam selection, compression ratio, and hopefully some rear wheel dyno numbers.

Thanks for the bump Steve,
I haven't been surfing in this topic much and I missed this.
I have just completed the short block for the 396ci Ford Stroker Cleveland and I will be starting on the 424ci AMC soon.
I have set my build aside so I can get this engine done for a friend. I promised it before I started my build.
My rods have been clearanced and it only needs to be balanced. My machine shop guy is just waiting for my call and he will get it done.
The compression is 10.5 and the cam is a soild with a 108 Lobe sep. / Int. lift .576 Ex. .584 / Dur @ .050 Int. 248 Ex. 258 / Adv Dur. 284 , 292.
My 74 AMX with driver is just under 3400# and I am hoping for......et's.   OOP'S,  I almost let it slip.
This is planned for another Forum Pass Time Poll. LOL
Maybe some that did'nt vote on the first one will vote on this one... Roll Eyes
If all goes well I will have engine dyno numbers for this one.  I plan on having Mpowerptg dyno it at his work.   AMXTRA

I'm not going to let you slack off on this one  Cheesy...any new updates?

Also, i was re-reading  your post and I didn't hear a lot of obsession about rotating weight.  I know you declined to knife edge the crank b/c of cost vs. benefit...I see that you've got some lighter weight pistons...and i'm not sure of the weight difference between your H-beams and stock rods...but I had read one of the car craft AMC articles and they were boasting about removing weight from the crank.  Any idea how much your current rotating assembly weighs vs. a stock set up...and any idea what that will translate into on the street?

Can't wait to hear about your first clicks down the track.  10.75 ET is my guess.

bump too.  And would you summarize what clearancing was required for the rods?  Are you talking side clearance, or rod to block or rod to cam clearance?

A couple of FYI's for future reference:

1) You could have a 2.000" (or further under sized) rod journal using a 2.100" rod if you use a bearing spacer. This MAY help with obtaining a desired stroke. 2.00" rods are getting more difficult to find as most of the aftermarket companies cater to the 1.88" Honda sized or 2.100" chevy size rods.

2) You can under cut the mains to a much smaller OD by also using a bearing spacer. Bearing spacers are not limited to SBC's! I am taking a 401 crank and using the 2.00" rod journal and 2.500" main journal (Rambler six cylinder bearing with spacer). I would only suggest this for a serious race effort.

3) Wish I would have known this a long time ago. The 401 crank starts out about 8 pounds lighter than the 1970 390 crank! By the time my shop undercuts the journals, reduces the CW diameter, gun drills the throws, I'm hoping to see a crank that is 12+ pounds lighter than my last crank.

4) I would also suggest for this pump-gas engine build oil shedding coatings applied to at least the crank CW's, preferably the crank and rods. It is a cheap, effective way to make HP. I would also suggest with such work on this crank it is cryo'd.

Thanks for pushing this back up guy's.
I talked to my machine shop guy yesterday and told him that I am ready for him to balance the rotating assembly. I will get the rotating weight posted.
This is the last thing that needs done before it comes home.
I have almost finished the 396ci Cleveland build and mine's next.
I have not weighed the differance between the rods but I can do so.
Remember, these rods were used because it was a set that I had from an earlier build.
They are Eagle rods and the clearance needed was for side to side.
I would not suggest anyone buying Eagle rods because the large ends were all over the place has far as width.  I have seen better results with the Scat's

Steve, your et predictions are very  lips sealed

Jeff, the 1.88" is no option for me. I think that's a bit thin. The 2.00" size would have been perfect if I didn't have the 2.100's on the shelf.
I did have the crank nitrided but not cryo'd...I might drop it in some dry ice later. Grin
Just kidding, the shop that I had it done only offered the nitride.

I will also have some flow numbers for the heads. They should be going for this next week.
These are a mildly ported set with bowl blending and the 2.08/1.74 valve size.

My 396ci ford build is up and running and we plan on making a trip to the track in a couple of weeks.
I had more work on the car then expected and had to take out the junk and wire the whole car.
Look for a 'Pass Time Poll ' soon.
This means I'll be getting back to this build in the near future.
I did optain head flow numbers on my gasket matched 6291C's that will be used to this engine.
@.700" we have Int:249.4 and Ex:177.2
This should work great for this build but I might do a little more work on the intake ports...I'm still tossing it around. undecided   AMXTRA

Update...
The rotating assembly is balanced and I will be bringing things home soon for assembly.
I have not been satisfied with the flow #'s on the heads and I didn't want to leave them alone.
After talking to Adkins I have decided to take the heads to him so he can do some magic on them.
Picking up the flow #'s will be a great gain in horsepower for this pump gas build.
I'll keep you updated.   AMXTRA

Tim,

Glad to hear you are able to work on the AMC engine again.

A couple of requests.

Can the heads be spray welded after they crack, or does that process have to take place beforehand?

Also, do you mind letting us know what you'll have in the heads $$$ total after Adkins' work?  I'm still a little curious what it costs to have a nice set of street heads built.

Thanks!

Steve
