Suspension and Brake upgrades - 67 rambler

Looking to upgrade my suspension and brakes on my 67 rambler.

Are there any popular/trusted conversions out there?

Looking to go disk brakes on the front, and any kind of suspension upgrade would be an improvement!

Open to suggestions.. will need excellent braking/cornering once my crazy engine is in place! Wink

Any of the disc set ups from any AMC will bolt on from the 4 bolt spindles out as a whole. Some are cheaper and or easier to find than others when looking. Some are working on using drum spindles and cheap, easy to find parts from other manf. may just need to make a bracket for the caliber.

As for the rest I only know of one kit that replaces the trunions with struts but you get cross member struts with calibers & rotors, rack & pinion and every thing to bolt it in.
There are 2 BUTs
1) I only know of it bolting in to 68-74 Javelin & AMX donít know if it would bolt in to yours.
2) Itís about $3000 but is a sweet kit

Other wise you are on your own to get some thing else to work like air bags or struts.

Believe it or not I am working on this also. The trunnions will be gone and replaced with a ball joint. It will use the amc knuckle from said 79 concord. When done it will be a coilover hybrid like the QA1 setup. Should now be able to get some decent caster and use some wider rims.Don't hold your breath on this one though. I'm still a good 6mo. away.
I am in the market for some QA1 GMP1 shocks if anyone has some. Just the shocks as I already have the springs.

My idea with the setup would leave most the Trunnion front and replace just the shock and spring with a QA1 ciolover and just modify the spring mount.  I am trying to lower the front and put a quality shock/spring in place of the OEM pieces.

I was thinking of an air bag set up, but right now my budget doesn't allow it.  I should be able to place a set of single adjustable QA1's in there for about $400.00

Well for now, I got a set of front and rear KYB shocks to put in  - anything else worth while doing at this stage??  It'll be a weekend job, so I'll need to be able to source any extra bits before then.

Cheers,

I got her running and moving, but barely stopping!!! I have to use both feet.. I plan on new pads and fluid, but I would prefer some more breaking power from the master cylinder .. any ideas???

I donít think it is that easy. Now if you can find a complete small car PB/power brake set up every thing from both sides of the fire wall it may bolt in? How many small cars came with PB? I still say if you donít know what shape the brake system is in go thru it as wheel cyl could be frozen an make it hard to stop then when that is all done then move to the next step of a booster.
BTW my 75 v8 gremlin came man. Drum/drum & my 76 285 came man. Disc/drum takes more leg power but both stop fine.

I'd have to say your brakes are hosed, Tad...  my '64 Am can stop just fine, manual drums all around.  Takes a little more legwork than my modern power boosted cars, but not nearly as horrible as the '73 Hornet I test drove just before the Am.. going back through my records, someone paid a LOT of attention to the brake system on my car, so everything is new or nearly new.

On that note, though...  if I found a Pacer with a front disc brake setup, would everything from the spindles out bolt onto my American?  Or was that one of the systems that was different enough on the Pacer that it's incompatible with other AMC's?  (found a Pacer in the local PaP, forgot to look at the brakes while I was there...)

On the Pacer brake parts I think that is one of the parts you CAN use on others. As said undo the 4 bolts and take every thing then when home you can replace the calibers if you think they are needed but would go for new hoses.

Hello, It was fairly easy to adapt a power booster to my '67 American. It required a doner booster and master.Problem is, I can't remember the doner car.If I remember right, the '68-'69 javelin/amx with factory disc brakes has a smaller diameter booster than the drum cars. Then I remember something about the brake lights switch being moved to the pedal instead of the master. I agree with the other members that, although not as easy as power brakes, the manual brakes, should work fine. On my car I used disc brakes off a spirit. If it were mine, I would want to stop, before passing go...mike

I'm not sure what to do at this point.. I guess my first try will probably be to flush the fluid, check the shoes/drums/cylinders and see how it stops.. if that works I'll hold off on the disc swap until my 258 project is done Smiley

If not..  well I'll let you know lol  Grin
