Any tips on removing axles out of an AMC 20 rear?  The tech manual indicates a couple of specialized tools, but I can't imagine finding those.

Yeah, I already was planning on welding the tubes, so the perches are a good
idea as well.  How are your perches braced?

I got them from Moser with the axles. Did it before that post was out.
For street and drag I don't think it's a big deal what type you use.
I think where this came to light was from the road race guys who put a LOT of side load on the bearings and that is the only thing holding the axles in the housing.

well i just happen to still have the empty box in my tool box
from the bearings that moser sent me with my axles about 9 years ago,
and the part # on it is RW903RCJ and under that it has the # RW903RCJ74  
 
these are the "green bearing" high performance wheel bearings made in the U.S.A.

The axle bearing for a Model 20 is BCA/ NATIONAL  A5  bearing.  The bearing comes with the cup.  
Can be purchased at any bearing supplyer or at a place like Rockauto.
 
PS.
Upon futher checking,  the RW903R interchanges to an A9 bearing.
Dont know why.  Maybe what Moser uses.
The correct bearing for stock axles is A5.
I can help you with interchanges if need be.
 
I rebuilt my rear a couple weeks ago  and I still had the bearing from the axles,  
1-Tyson bearing LM48548  made in the good old US of A  
1- Timken bearing LM48548 made in the good old US of A

I got my axles back from Moser and had my machine shop press the bearings on.
Everything went very smoothly with the right axle.
The left axle was cut incorrectly, the width of the axle where the bearing sits was not cut uniformly,
it measured between 1/370 and 1/375.
The bearing pressed on fine at first and was loose the further it went.
I spoke with a Moser rep and he said it should be at 1/381.
I'm sending it back. Here is a pic of the right side installed.
