I had a genius ask if my Eagle wagon was a Pacer at the gas station last week. At least after correcting him he seemed to figure out it wasn't a Pacer. I pointed out this car was 4 wheel drive. That is when he told me that he and his buddy used to take the buddy's Pacer to the nearby dunes back in '82 Huh Apparently another buddy who owned a tow-truck would pull them out after the inevitable rear-end strand on a dune top. Not immediate it seems- he said the Pacer had knobbies!

I was bring my Javelin home from 25 years of storage on the farm and stoppped to gas up the tow vehicle.  Two young ladies walked up and as I sucked up my gut, one of them asked if that was a Javelin.  I said, "yes it is".  She said, "cool, my grandfather had one, it was really neat"  My gut fell back out.

I had a neighbor kid (17)ask if my 70 AMX had a cold air kit in it.
I tried not to laugh since he's a good kid. Just told him with the ram air hood and
open element air cleaner its about as cold air as you can get.
Had the same question asked by an equally clueless kid. I just pointed to the scoops on the hood of my '70 AMX and said:"See those?  Those aren't a JC Whitney stick-on accessory.  They are factory and they really work!"  Kid was like "WHOA!!!"  Shocked

I am currently working on a 80 Spirit hatchback and I have a neighbor who insists that it is a Gremlin.  When he first saw it, the car still had the Spirit emblems on it although they are gone now.  But for the most part, the car guys that see it recognize what it is, or at least recognize that it is AMC.

I was in my '73 Javelin last summer, when a mid 40's redneck in a 80's ford truck next to me leans out of his window and says "Thats a pretty 'ol crappity smacker!" lol. "What is that a Mustang?" So I politely reply, "nope its an AMC Javelin". Then he says "A Javelin, I haven't seen one of those in 25 years!" Lol, by the way the guy had maybe 4 teeth.  Grin

Got the idiots down here in Oz too.
Guy came round to pick up the shell of a Matador I'd parted out. Had my 74 Gremlin on a rotisserie, so stripped down you'd have to know your cars to pick it. Straight away he says, hey thats a Gremlin ! So I think hey this guy knows his cars. Then he loses all cred when he asks if I'm keeping the 4 cylinder engine in it or upgrading to a six.

Hmmmm, well at least he knew the Gremlin did have a 4-cylinder engine..... stripped down to a shell, you'd have to be a die-hard AMC nut to know exactly what year it is. Gremmie's did have a 4-popper option in '77 and '78.

Hey Bob,
I definately can feel your pain. My Aussie Falcon gets some doozies, It's been called a Javelin ( which is somewhat understandable seeing as it has big hips like the 71-74s) The dash is almost a reverse image of the Jav dash layout. It's been called a Torino, Cyclone , Chevelle ,442, Talladega. On top of that is the questions of where it was built. RHD really screws up people, I've gotten England( Yes their cars  RHD) Best one is " Is that from Canada?"Are people really that clueless that they don't know Canada is the same as us except for the metric system. Which when that question comes up we tell them it's a Mexican Mustang . They go away satisfied . Really love when someone wants to argue what the car is. I told a guy he says Australia doesn't make their own cars. ??? What Ford has been building cars there since 1925, Holden soon after. Showed him the dash plates that say Built in BroadMeadows Australia . I hear him say to his buddy " I don't know how he can get away with making his own plates" To which I remember what my Mom said to me " Never argue with a moron you'll always lose"
