Quadrajet on an AMC?
12/16/09 at 04:24:47

Hey all, I was just wondering how hard it would be to put a Quadrajet carb. on an AMC 360.  Do I have to do any nmodifications since it's intended for a chevy or is it just plug-n-play?  Thanks.

Other than the appropriate intake manifold, the carb doesn't know what engine it's going on. The Q-Jet is a very good dual purpose carb. Check out Pony Carbs in New Mexico.

One option would be a Spreadbore to Square Flange Adapter, Edelbrock, TransDapt, etc.
Not the greatest for good flow, but it works.
Manifolds may have carb stud tapped hole patterns for both carb flange patterns,
but manifold opening would have to clear large q-jet secondary butterflies.
iirc spreadbore pattern is closer together than a square flange.  Compared to square flange,
installing a spreadbore Holley is a pita, studs & nuts are somewhat under the fuel bowls.
The carbs studs gotta be exactly the correct length so they don't hit bottom of bowls.
Gotta lift up on the carb to get the nuts in place and started on the studs.

The Q-Jet is an excellent carb, I have one on my Javelin.

Torker intake/spreadbore adapter/Q-jet

If you get a q-jet with the right type of choke setup....ie heat tubes....the choke will even be functional.

Alright, next question, will a Q-Jet work on a stock 360 intake?

Edit:  Nope, never mind, my intakes a 2bbl, and I need a 4bbl.  heh...

I think you could pick up an alum. 4bbl intake some where cheap if you wanted to do this.

Latter AMC's and Jeeps used a cast iron intake with the Motocraft spread bore 4 barrel carbeurator.  I have had a couple of those intakes and just about can't give them away.  I would think that they would work with the Quadrajet.

I have an aluminum edelbrock intake and was planning on putting a q-jet on it, is there much of a performance loss using an adapter plate?

Thanks a lot, sorry for the hijack but it all relates

As I recall, and it's been a looong time, those AMC spreadbores have a unique carb bolt pattern and will not accept a Q-Jet. I may be wrong, just check it out.

Adapters work but dyno results may suffer. I say dyno because a ttypical street car driver will not notice a performance loss by using an adapter.

Q jet do not fit drectly to any amc intake even the spread bore later model one. The adapters at parts store to puq a q-jet to a square bore  are pretty cheap like 15 bucks. They come most of the time with gaskets and the studs to install. That said, since you are going to use an adapter anyway, and cost is a factor, you can buy a spread bore to 2bbl adapter, this works well, and as was suggested the adapter power loss will not be detected from daily cruising. If you test it on a dyno or track yes, but not a huge ammount. If the q-jet is new enough it will have electric choke on it.  The only issues you may have is if the carb is not in good shape, and if you cannot fix or tune it. Then it would be money better spent to get a Holley, or Edelbrock, or a Carter. Since there are alot of folks to help you tune them. SH

Offenhauser makes an AMC aluminum intake that will accept a Q-jet carb, I know because I have one on my car.
