Rule of thumb I have heard is you want the stall to be 1000 less than the rpm where you make peak HP.  Guessing with your cam that is maybe 5500, so a 4000-4500 stall converter would not be out of the question.  I am assuming that you do not drive this car, except down the track.  Cuz that rule of thumb is you want the stall to be less than your cruising rpm...

I've run an 8" 5500 stall behind a 401 with a 236 degree hydraulic cam, 9.5 cr, torker, 850, and 410 gear, 28" slick 2900 lb Hornet - sounds a lot alike don't it? That combo went 10.70's shifting at 6000.

An 8" might be a bit much for a 232 degree cam, but I know one guy doing just that in a street car. Don't be afraid of high stall as long as the converter is a good design. But if it is a hack job converter that some guy has been in there bending stuff to get a particular stall speed you will have a overheating power robbing eggbeating fluid cooking tranny ruining slug of a car!

I have ran a high stall convertor around on the street some. It's really not a problem if it is a high quality converter.

If you buy junk you have junk.

I have had excellent results out of ATI converters....but be preparred to spend $800-$1000.

I know you couldn't help it....nothing like a good dig to bring a smile to everyone  Grin

A good converter $800-$1000.....a select older turbo 400 core with the good gm (government motors) guts...?? scrap price...... heavy duty sprag......$65.......ultrabell....$300....sfi flexplate $350...rebuild kit .....$65 - $75.......labor for my rebuilder $300.00.....trans brake valvebody off ebay from Redneck Performance Smiley works great $280 (I paid a lot less for mine 4 years ago)

Maybe around $2200.00 or so total race rdy....and a nice heavy duty unit that will take some abuse !

A nice wormbox setup to go fast and not break....$10,000

Those worms are to expensive to row !

Smiley

If I ever get rich enough to own a real nice lenco or liberty setup that would be cool but a big bore block, billet crank and some heads to go with it comes first

The prices I have heard for an automatic that will live behind 1200~1500hp is a lot higher than $2200.  A trans like that would probably work great at a lower power level.

As for the MANual trans:  Wink
$4500 for used Liberty ready to go w/ shifter
$1200 for custom bell housing
$1800 for custom clutch & flywheel
= $7500.  Not cheap but an automatic that can handle the same power level is not much cheaper.

And with a convertor you will find that to get it optimum you will have to send it back once or twice to get it perfect...unless you buy a bolt together unit...$$$$
But a YDF Data logger will help in torque convertor refinement Wink

My grandmother could drive an automatic and probably install a NOS system too.

I wish I had 1200-1500 HP to put to mine to see what happened...it would probably snap like a toothpic but it does a good job at my power level for pretty cheap  ! Smiley

To get to 1500 HP to try out the theory I need about a 800 HP shot of nitrous.....lol....and I would rather not scrape my crank up off the track.

She was a pretty tough & determined old lady, mowed her own ward with a big Yazoo until the age of 85 and lived 4 months short of 100 years.

A little off track.....but anyway I am going get some  chassis dyno numbers and then see where my power band is....
I think Ralfy is close.....it runs best shifting around 5500.....not much difference between  5500 and 6000......

thanks for the help.....good humor..and hey...... I would love to drive a stick.....but a bum left knee thinks otherwise.....
