LED dash lights
03/09/10 at 04:19:11

I want to change over all the dash lights to LED’s and got thinking about the ALT. light.
I know the light needs to be there to charge the batt. And was wondering if the LED would be ok or not let it charge. Any thought on this?
Thanks

Depends on the topology of the charging circuit if it would work or not, but most likely not, at least not if you replace the ALT light with a LED unit just like that. I would just let that ALT light be a regular bulb or mount a LED unit with a resistor parallel over it to simulate the charge/resistance of a regular bulb. It doesn't need to be a lamp to make the charging circuit work, so a resistor behind the dash cluster or tucked away near the alternator or regulator, will do the job just the same. Indication from the LED and the charging circuit stimulated by the resistor. A value between 5 to 7 Ohms should do it, a 4 or 5 Watt piece is more than enough. Standard resistor values are for instance 5.6 and 6.8 Ohms.

Thanks Peter for the info. Someone on the  other site said the same as you, use the stock bulb or use a resistor with the LED bulb. Going with the stock bulb for the ALT the rest will get LED's.
Thanks again

Hey Dave,

What type of LED's are you using, sounds like a neat mod, might do it myself while the instrument cluster is out?

I am looking at this site http://www.mustangproject.com/
From this page http://www.mustangproject.com/Catalog.aspx?category=68642387-6653-4218-935e-8961 9ca5f35a&sub=0d0b575a-09bf-4c3e-bbe7-79540d52c7d3
I do have other sites saved if you want them but to me they are in some kind of code and hard to find bulbs that would work. The bulbs listed I believe are the same as used in their dash light kits.1 of the kits may work but it does not list what bulbs & number are used.
The other post you may want to check out is this one for outside bulbs. I will be doing all outside bulbs too (custom look) other than head lights as $600 is too much for them. http://amccars.net/cgi/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1237758686

I was having a quick look on ebay and found these guys:

http://stores.ebay.com/autokenz

Thought some of their dash lights might fit into the AMC bulb holders.

They also have tail light and indicator replacement bulbs.

My son keeps telling me to go ebay for less $ but is if does not look or say it is a 194 bulb I move on. The thing that would concern me is they might be too long to fit. On my 70 there is room in the gauge cluster to replace all the 194 bulbs (other than the ALT one) but not the 1891 that light up the wiper & head light switch, clock, ash tray, auto shifter from what I remember as they have a color hood just in side the holder.
