4wd 727 to 2wd??? possible???
03/09/10 at 23:24:36

Is it possible to convert a 727 out of a 82 jeep 4wd to a 2wd trans?
is the internals the same?
can the tail shaft bolt on where the transfer case mounts?
is the output shaft on an automatic trans removable or does the shaft run all the way thru?
any help would be great, thanks

Yes you can use it with some work. To do this you need to change out to out put shaft & tail housing. To do this the trany has to come all apart as the out put shaft is the first to go into the case on a rebuild. So in short you are rebuilding the trany. Good thing is you can use any AMC or Mopar 727 out put shaft & tail housing, same with the parts inside. only differance between the AMC and the Mopar 727 (and the 904) is the bell housings, they will only bolt to like motors (amc to amc / mopar to mopar).
With that said it might be easier /cheaper to find a 727 from an AMC car? What ever you get the trany from get the kick down linkage too.

The 4wd and 2wd transmissions are both amc's, so your sayin if i use the tailshaft and output shaft from the 2wd in the 4wd it would work?

If they are both AMC then why change over the out put shaft from 1 AMC to the other AMC? Yes it will but to change it over you have to take both of them apart all the way - read rebuild.
The out put shaft is the last part to come out and the first to go back in on a rebuild.
If the 2wd is bad and needs a rebuild I would just rebuild it and keep the 4wd as a spare if the case or insides blow up on the 2wd trany.

Well said Dave Smiley, I am with you on that one, might as well put a rebuild into the 2wd one, since both are on hand. SH
