73 Javelin AMX
11/27/11 at 18:48:00

Now that I've turned over the 72 Javelin AMX to my son Lenny, it's finally time to get back into my Javelin. It's been sitting in my son Josh's garage for about 7 years. I bought it in 2000 from Pennsylvania. It's a Javelin AMX 401 auto, a/c, vinyl roof, gauges, dual exhaust, twin grip and center console. It was pretty well whipped when I got it but it still ran and moved. I rebuilt both rockers complete from the inside out, replaced the floors, lower quarters, trunck floor, rebuilt the tailight panel and painted the car with a Chevy truck clear that was a close match to the Cordoba brown the car was originally. It has Moser axles in a 3.15 rear.
I have a Ron Francis wiring harness kit to install, I have the headliner recovered and some of the interior pieces painted.
Here are some pictures of the move:

Some pictures of the under side of the car:

Dave, as always the car looks killer.  Must be nice to have the car back and have already done the hard part.  What are the plans for the motor, stock or warmed up?  Andy

Looks great in that color Dave. Plans on stripes? Black or tan interior?

Andy/amxdreamer,
Thanks for the compliments. The motor will be similar to Lenny's, I won't get into that part until next year. Stripe will be gold fadaway when I get around to that, probably after it's on the road, which I expect to be in two years, at least that's my goal. The way my projects have been going it will probably be more. The interior is staying tan. I blended some DuPont vinyl paint that came out close to the original color, just a little lighter. Vinyl roof will go on before I install the front and rear glass, I will probably use black but I've been thinking about brown.

Hi Dave,I met you at Sturbridge. I have the baby blue 72 AMX.  Car looks fantastic in that color as is. Might you reconsider the vinyl top?

Your car looks great ! The vinyl roofs look nice but I prefer not to have it on mine . I find that they hold water and even after you wash and dry the car there's still some water coming from the trim for the vinyl roof . I also had a 72 Javelin that rotted out really bad under the vinyl top . I'm looking forward to watching your build .

I like them on the 71-72 but not on the 73-74 as it comes all the way down the quarter

Laugh if you want, but I'd put a tan top with tan interior in that car, I think it would be neat.  Under normal circumstances I hate vinyl tops, but there is something about that color combo on that car. Andy

The tan interior will look great! Will the brown roof be a light or dark brown? Light would blend the stripes and the interior and IMO look good. I think the worry about vinyl roofs rotting the car is valid on a daily driver but the "show car" should last almost forever!

Thanks for the replies.
The interior is what I would call a medium tan. I'm not sure that it would make a good vinyl top color. It's mostly Chrysler ginger with GM dark sienna and some red oxide.
I'm sure black would look good, the top was painted black when I got it. I wish I could actually see it with some different colored tops. Black, light tan, dark tan, brown and gold would be nice to compare. I think when I go to buy the top it will probably only be available in black and white so if I want something different I'll probably have to paint it. Right now if I didn't do black I think I'd go with a dark brown.
I know vinyl tops have a bad reputation for holding water and causing rust, but this car started life with a vinyl top and the roof is still original. I think it will last as long as I do. If heaven forbid the top ever needs to be replaced I've done it before, I ain't scared. I've just always liked the look of vinyl tops, although oddly enough I'm not real fond of convertable tops.

The reason most vinyl tops rust out so bad is they were never painted under them. If they are painted the roof will last forever under the vinyl.
