2.5 liter 150 ci AMC engine performance mods

Hello to all. I've been an avide AMCer all of my adult life and more into the performance aspect but as of late my attention is going fuel economy but still have to have that performance itch. At this piont I own a 401 Pacer paneled S/W.  72 Matador 2dr 401. a few jeeps and my latest project a 59 Rambler American 2dr S/W. I have two 2.5 Four cylinder engines that I am rebuilding one for the Rambler. I have Googled this engine and there doest seem to be alot of performance parts for this engine, unlike the 4.0 I6. Has anyone have any ideas on the way to go. seams to be a strong engine better then most I've seen. By the way there is absolutely no way a 4.0 can fit in the engine compartment. I bought a jeep with a 4.0 for that purpose  and it just wont work unless I cut into the bulkhead     Note If it's not broke, modify it!

I did up a 2.5 in my SX/4 years back..
block went .030 over. installed a RV grind cam. port the heck out of the head, and  re worked the carb..
it was a little stick car, so the little rv cam did not effect the idle at all.
it was no racer, but it had alot more zip then before hand... timing gear stripped is why i decided to just go threw the engine.

Thanks for the feedback. I've read about the mods to the 4.0 and probably can use this on the 2.5. I'm having the engine bored .030 over and installing KBlack Hyperu pistons, machine the head .010 to help comp. I have two intakes one for the 84 engine carburated and the other has a throttle body. Looking at the throttle body intake it looks as if the base plate is also set up for a progressive weber carb like the one used on the old Pintos and Vegas. A simple easily modified carb. Cam profile I would like a bit more aggressive and there doest seam to be anyone out there that makes one.  488 lift 310 dur or something around that, I dont know if there is enough on the stock cam to be regrounded or if anyone does that type of work anymore. Exhaust header cant find one either. maybe a 4.0 header with the center two tubed taken out and a modified collector, a thought. Any other thoughts out there.

Archer Brothers Racing in Duluth Minn. used to road race the AMC 4 cyl engines in Jeep Commanche pickups and dominated in the late '80's!

Racer Brown still custom grinds cams. I can get his number if you can't find anything on the net. His shop is literally right at the end of my street

Have you considered a turbo?

There was lots of development on the GM Iron Duke engine. Does any of that apply to the AMC?  I thought they were the same.

Iron duke is totally different. Up untill recently I didn't know AMC made there own I4. From what I have read it's a 4.2 I6 with the 2 center cylinders removed. The head was improved and the 4.0 I6 that came later used the head design from the 2.5. The only other AMC 4 cyl engine was a V4 air cooled diesel. Saw it at a show in Houston, now that is freaky

I owned an AMC Spirit (1980?) with a 4cyl. engine and it was an Ironpuke. Valve cover leaked constantly because the valve cover surface and top of the intake runners were the same height. I used to call it the gutless wonder.

When did AMC build their own I4 ?

AMC built there own I4 starting 83 I have a Jeep Cherokee that has the AMC 150 ci. Iron duke is 151 ci. the way to tell the difference is the iron duke has the intake and exhaust on different sides the AMC has the exhaust and intake on the drivers side same as the 4.0. I was looking for an engine for my American and wanted a I4 and thats when I found this info. I overlooked the Jeep two doors down because I thought it was an Iron duke. It had the 150ci and a spare engine was thrown in all for free guy just didn't want to see it anymore.
