Tom, My engine has water going in the front of the block and out the back top side of the block. Then in the back of the heads and out the front. Nothing through the intake or head gasket and it works fine. On the iron engine the block was completely filled so the water went in the front of the heads and out the back through a common tube/plenum. No problem with that either. I think you will not have any problems with what you described.
