I was hoping to do some research at the AMO nationals this weekend. I really think the older roof can be used as a replacement with some minor rework at the rear quarter. Is the roof solid where the trim clips attach?

ok, got curious- popped trim off and got a surprise- did you know 67 rebel and ambo were Rubber gasket windows ? dont imagine it makes a difference,

i DID find some rust under the trim- on the passenger side, not through, but it IS there- pins look to be all there though- i felt in there with a screw driver, but because of the rubber gasket, i cant look

Looking at cars at the AMO National show last weekend, it looks like I could make use of an early roof without too much trouble.

Dennis, my concern wasn't so much that the pins are there, but that the metal is sound in that area. That's a place that's hidden by mouldings and can be a problem area, front and back. Got any idea what it takes to get a roof from Oroville to Adams? I've got some more leads on possible cars more local to me but need time to track them down.

AmcKidd Forum Junkie American Motors Corporation Posts: 557 Gender: Oroville, Ca	Re: 73 Ambassador 2-door Reply #37 - 07/17/12 at 15:42:19 ok, i thought the pins were your concern- under the vynil it IS soft- in a few places. the rubber seal for the window kept the edge of the rag top in decent shape, meaning it did absorb some water in the area- there is so much white cloth and seam sealer on the edge its hard to get a decent picture

Dennis, It sure is hard to tell from a picture. I can't see the rust through so I really can't make a judgement on the part. Since you can see it first hand and you say there is rust through I'm probably going to pass. I may kick myself later. I'm guessing shipping would be costly and then I'd still have to repair and then modify the roof. I do appreciate that you thought of me in this matter, thank you.

The linkage was rusted and siezing both sides of the firewall. Took it apart, cleaned and greased it, works good now. That and adjusted the choke. It's a lot easier to move it around now. Dave Z

Dave how were the nylon bushings on the motor side pivit or does yours not use them? On my Javelin I found the same thing, rusted and did not want to move as should but in getting it apart the bushings got wasted. I could not find any thru venders so had to make them. Found the right OD at the local hard ware store and drilled out the center - that was fun!

Nylon bushings on the engine side of the firewall were usable, most of the rust seemed to be in the center between the bushings. On the passenger side of the firewall, one bushing usable, the other just about gone but I used what was left for now. On the Javelins I used the best of whatever was hanging around. I've junked a few cars and tried to keep a lot of the odd parts.

I made some progress over the last two days. I pulled the engine, degreased it and pulled the core plugs, which I knew were bad when I bought it. I flushed the block, replaced the core plugs and have the engine bolted back in the car. I have some new hoses and belts comming in tomorrow, I'll be putting in the old radiator from my 73 Javelin for now. Core plugs were actually hard to find in stock locally, I spent quite a bit of time chasing them down.
