Trans Am wheels... What size?
07/18/12 at 19:31:07
What size wheels did the 71+ Trans Am cars run? The minilite ones? Obviously the wheel wells were worked over so I know they won't fit on a stock humpster. That style looks so right on these cars though, what size (minilite style) wheel would give you the same early 70's roadrace feel without looking undersized or pro touring?

I'm pretty sure the originals were 15 inch wheels
Here are some options. On the left are 16 inch Vintage Wheel Works wheels. On the right are 17 inch Team 3 wheels. The shape on the spokes on the Team 3 wheels are closer to the originals and fit the curves of the Humpster cars better. the tires on both cars are 25.7 inches in diameter.

Thanks! Beautiful cars! That's exactly the info I was looking for. I'm trying to decide what size wheels to put on the wish list. My wife likes the 17's, but I want a more vintage look with a bit more tire. Now that I can see the difference in this pic, I think 16's will fit the bill nicely. Can I see more pics of both cars? -Rob

Good to know. So now I'm just on the fence between 15's and 16's...

If you dont need to be with in "rules" and need to run the 15" I would go with 16". The reason is you have a lot more selection of rubber with the 16" than the 15"
I have a set of TT in the 14" size and I cant find a lot of rubber in the 245/60/14 or even the 235/60/14 that I would go with. So look to see what you can get for rubber before getting the wheel. Oh the TT were on the car when I got it with the 245/60/124.

Good advise Dave. The only criteria I have is purely asthetic. I really want that 'Day two' look for this car, and want to avoid looking too modern... The 16's are definatley more practical, but will they look close enough to period correct?
Anyone know a place that could photoshop different size wheels on my car for comparison?

Rob, as your car came with 15's I don't think going to 16's will look odd and think you should still look good with 17's.

I have 265/45/16 Kumho Victoracers on 16x8 GTA Trans Am wheels on a lowered 73 AMX. Doesn't look like a forklift to me....
Handles like stink too!!! Always scares the F-cars following 'em down the off ramp and cloverleaf!!

Yours and Aaron's cars are beautiful, even though his newest aquisition is only a cousin by marriage. I need to send my SC360 out to Colorado so you guys can rebuild/restore it for me.....even though it is just a lowly Hornet as compared to your AMXs & Javelins.

Thanks Tony and Wayne, I created this for a bit of a comparison. 15's, 16's, and 17's.
I think I'm leaning 15's now.... But they all look really good!
Klvn8r, could you share some pics? Thanks -Rob

All of my pics are on my old computer.....new laptop a few weeks back. I'm pretty sure there are some on here....dig around. Maybe inside a profile or ??? Sorry....
Wait!!! Here we go. Not "up to date" but still correct. Track pics are 16x 8 with the Kumhos, the 6 spokes are 15x8 American Racing T/A's. Yes, they are MAGNESIUM, and period correct for a T/A car! They wear 235/60/15 Yokohamas.
