Our 21st Annual “All-AMC Day” (was the first one at Atco really THAT long ago???) took place last Saturday 7/28 at its 4th venue, Mason-Dixon Dragway in Hagerstown, MD. Although the weather was hot and steamy, and there were a couple really near-misses from some passing thunder showers, we stayed dry from beginning to end. Elmer & Cathy Wachter and their staff did a fine job of working with our planning group led by Harley Smith whose efforts to make the event a success were EXCEPTIONAL to say the least! For being the first time at the facility, there was bound to be some “getting acquainted” issues to deal with but once things got rolling, things seemed to run smoothly throughout the rest of the day. A quick walk through the show field revealed there was quite a turnout of about 40 cars that ran the gamut from top-level restorations of Preston Carter and Harley Smith to Mike Weaver’s vintage Road Race AMX to Lloyd Liskey’s AMC-powered dirt modified. The vendor turn-out was also very good with another wide variety of parts from NOS to well-used along with quite a collection of one-of a-kind memorabilia available. The on-track activities had about 25 cars going through Tech but when eliminations started we only had 3 cars in Super, 16 in Heavy and just 2 in the Street class. I had hopes of a better Racer turn-out but, we will continue our efforts to rebuild the car count. I would like to sincerely thank Rich LaMont, (original owner and driver of the WIBG Pro Stock Gremlin) for his generous contribution of $500.00 toward the purse of the meet. After his original plan of the $500.00 going toward the Footbrake (Heavy) purse, he changed it around a bit and directed $300.00 to the Heavy purse, $100.00 to the Street Trophy Winner and the remaining $100.00 to the “Best of Show” winner. (Can you tell, Rich is Old-School and isn’t big on cars with “Electronics”?) We ended up paying out over $800.00 in purse money to our participants and here are the results: Super ET Winner: Patric Fox, Pottstown, PA Runner-Up- Yves Langellier, Laval, Quebec, Canada Heavy Winner: Keith Penatzer, Portage, PA Runner-Up- Dan Willever, Emmaus, PA Semi-Finalists: Steve McCully, Rockville, MD & John Button, Robesonia, PA Street Trophy Winner: Greg Ecker, Westminster, MD Runner-Up- Ron Kramer, Lititz, PA “Best of Show” Winner: Bill Thames, Mauldin, SC Thanks again to those who helped make our event a success, especially to everyone who made the trip to Mason-Dixon Dragway to participate. Now that we have “the lay of the land”, next year’s 22nd Annual event should run even smoother and be even more enjoyable for everyone. See YOU There!!! -Don Bangs
