I have a 1969 amx 390 engine, complete running, carb to pan, with the right exhaust manifolds,intake and carb, factory chrome covers. have a guy that wants it for AMX restoration, not sure what is a fair price for this engine? any thoughts?

I'd say more like $2000, easily.  That's very fair.  Considering you would pay that much in machining costs alone.  Core 401's go for 1000 all day long.  There are a lot more 401's out there than 68/69 390's.  Plus your's is complete w/ everything-factory.  If you are building a AMC show car, you need what you need.
